Respite breaks for carers and taking time out
Carers carry out sensitive chores that require physical, emotional and time investment in loved ones. Often times, they do this without taking breaks.
Studies revealed that carers are at breaking point. According to a 2018 survey carried out by Carers UK, 69% of carers find it difficult to sleep, 54% have reduced their exercises and 45% sacrifice their healthy patterns. Carers are in desperate need of respite care.
NHS defines it as “taking a break from caring, while the person you care for is looked after by someone else.”
Many reports point to guilt as one reason why many carers pooh-pooh the idea of respite care. How can one leave loved ones in the care of others? That’s usually the question.
Taking time off caring, will not only boost the carers’ energy but will serve as a conduit for them to execute properly on their return. The NHS recommends that carers take respite holidays, get friends and family to help or paid carers. In other words, rejuvenation is something that must be attached to the fabric of taking care of our loved ones.
Taking respite care will help carers build a healthy relationship with their loved ones and prevent a dangerous existence.
